We had optimized every corner of the apartment so we could store all his stuff, like diapers and a stroller, but there was no room for a play kitchen. Every time we visited friends with a little play kitchen, he would spend hours playing there by himself. Here are our thoughts on this season’s inadvertent (and possibly advertent) snubs, delightful (or mystifying) surprises and other notable anomalies. A melancholy morning for ‘Vanya.’Television stars are considered good box office but not always good Tony bait. This year’s crop, including Sarah Paulson, Jeremy Strong, Steve Carell and William Jackson Harper, complicates that wisdom. Spreading all that love helped take the show to Number One with a Bullet — the most nominated play in Broadway history. On the other hand, the superb ensemble casts of “Jaja’s African Hair Braiding” and “Illinoise” were skunked.

CNN —For me, writing a haiku a day began as a practice on my birthday, October, 2022. CHICAGO (AP) — As temperatures hover below freezing in Chicago, dozens of asylum-seekers are staying in the lower level of a library until the bitter cold gripping much of the country lifts. But after that, Chicago’s plans for offering immediate shelter to the growing number of migrants arriving in the nation’s third-largest city remain murky. Last week, it was parked city buses. “The city’s favorite word for everything is ‘temporary,’” said Vianney Marzullo, a volunteer who has helped migrants staying at O’Hare International Airport. Marylin Gonzalez, 34, slept on the buses last week along with her husband and three children, ages 15, 16 and 18.

A trader works on the floor at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., October 27, 2023. October has lived up to its reputation for volatility, as a surge in Treasury yields and geopolitical uncertainty pressured stocks. Higher Treasury yields are seen as a headwind to stocks, in part because they compete with equities for buyers. More broadly, some believe the stock market's trading patterns this year point to a rebound in the fourth quarter. "The stock market is poised for a late Q4 rally."

Federal researchers tracked self-reported mental health symptoms among more than a thousand adult workers in 2018 and 2022, including 226 health care workers in 2018 and 325 in 2022. Compared with other groups surveyed, health care workers reported a substantial jump in poor mental health days in the month prior, from 3.3 in 2018 to 4.5 in 2022. Less than 30 percent of health workers last year described themselves as very happy, a decline from 2018. And the percentage of health care workers reporting harassment on the job more than doubled, compared with the rate in 2018. “Whatever is happening out in the world walks into our health care facilities.”Nearly half of health care workers surveyed said they were somewhat or very likely to look for new work, the researchers found — an ominous sign for providers already struggling to retain staff.

CNN —President Joe Biden and his Oval Office predecessor, Donald Trump, are about to wage the most direct showdown yet of their possible rematch as far-right House Republicans drive the nation to the brink of a government shutdown. Trump, seeking to sow dysfunction on Biden’s watch and advance his political goals as the GOP front-runner for 2024, is goading his loyalists to shut Washington down. Michigan – which Trump won in 2016 but Biden pulled back into the Democratic column in 2020 – will again be a vital general election state. With the political heat over a potential shutdown rising, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg toured Sunday political talk shows to pressure Republicans. He wrote on his Truth Social network that the shutdown was the “last chance to defund these political prosecutions against me and other Patriots.

Italy was in the grip of extreme heat waves, hellish wildfires and biblical downpours, and a nerve-wracked young Italian woman wept as she stood in a theater to tell the country’s environment minister about her fears of a climatically apocalyptic future. “I personally suffer from eco-anxiety,” Giorgia Vasaperna, 27, said, her eyes welling and her hands fidgeting, at a children’s film festival in July. “I have a responsibility toward all of you,” he said, visibly choked up. “I have a responsibility toward my grandchildren.”Europe is a continent on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Patty’s maternal relationships with Cecile and Sammy are the play’s sources of conflict (Patty’s offstage husband, Hal, we’re told, is “fine”). The matriarch is little more than an amalgam of stereotypes; that there is truth to them is hardly a revelation. But the play does little to question or disrupt the preconceived notions it assumes New York audiences will have about “an Upper West Side lady” like Patty. If this is a character study, Patty’s pungent, messy center is largely withheld from view. Unfortunately, Cecile is kept at arm’s length from a story in which she seems to have the most compelling inner life.
